Department of Food Science and Nutrition

The Department of Food Science and Nutrition was established in the year 1994.  It is located on the first floor of the KanadBhawan, the Science block of the University.  The salient features of the Department include qualified faculty, guest faculty, well equipped classrooms, state of the Art Laboratories , Smart Boards, Projectors, and Projection Screens in seminar rooms, advanced lab equipments for teaching and research, regular classes internship in dietetics in reputed hospitals of India, discipline and a congenial atmosphere conducive for learning. The Department has an Ajmer chapter of Nutrition Society of India.  The Department offers the following courses.

  1. B.Sc food Science and Nutrition (3 year programme in 6 semesters)
  2. M.Sc Foods and Nutrition (2 year programme in 4 semesters)
  3. PG diploma in nutrition and Dietetics (1year programme in 2 semesters)
  4. Ph.D. in foods and Nutrition

Details of the eligibility, number of seats, and admission procedure for these courses can be seen in the university prospectus.  Students of the department qualify national level exams like UGC NET, RPSC- SET and find very promising placements as Dieticians in prestigious hospitals and health centres, teaching jobs, as lifestyle and health counsellors in food industries etc. The department also organises short-term skill bases courses /training programmes for students such as

  • Bakery products
  • Assessment of body composition
  • Development of low cost nutritious recipes and value added products
  • Mid day meal snacks for communities
  • Nutraceuticals
  • Chromatographic/microbiological techniques
  • Assessment of nutritional status of nearby communities using various techiniques
  • Entrepreneurial skill development
  • Analysis of proximate principles in foods
  • Phytochemical content in various foods

The permanent faculty of the Department is as under

  1. Professor Bharti Jain, Head department of Food Science and Nutrition, M.Sc Ph.D. Area of specialisation- Food Science and Food Analysis, development of value added products, Public Nutrition, Community and Clinical Nutrition.

  2. Professor Ritu Mathur M.Sc Ph.D.
    Area of specialisation- Clinical and Therapeutic Nutrition, Physiology, Biochemistry, Nutrition for Vulnerable groups, Problems in Human Nutrition, Food Microbiology.Total teaching experience- 23 Years.

  • Ph.D. - Foods & Nutrition

Eligibility:
A candidate for admission to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) must have obtained the Masters degree with at least 55 percent marks at the postgraduate examination of the University or an equivalent examination recognized by the University in the subject or any allied subject in which he/she wishes to pursue research. If the candidate secures less than 55 percent marks at the postgraduate examination but has secured second division at postgraduate as well as degree level, he/she will be eligible for admission to Ph.D. Programme.
The candidate seeking admission in Ph.D Programme are advised to go through the ordinance No. 124 relating to the degree of Ph.D. A seprate advertisement (Admission Notice) will appear in the state level newspapers for RET only on the availability of seats and admission to the Ph.D. Programme in various subjects offered by the University.

M.Phil Foods & Nutrition (SFS)

Eligibility:
Admission to the M.Phil. Programme will be made on the basis of Entrance Test the Admission Eligibility Test (AET). A candidate for admission to the courses of study for the degree of M.Phil. must have obtained a Masters degree in the concerned subject with at least 55% marks at the postgraduate examination or second division at the post graduate examination with at least second division at the examination of the MDS University or of any other University/Institution.
A Separate admission notice will appear in the National/Regional newspaper for AET-M.Phil. and admission to M.Phil. Programme in various subjects offered by the university.
In order to fill up reservation quota, relaxation in the eligibility will be given to SC/ST/OBC/SBC/PH etc. up to the pass percentage of the qualifying examination subject to the condition that such person shall not be considered for general category even if he/she secure marks in the merit in AET-M.Phil. at the level of general category.
AET-M.Phil. will be of two papers of 100 marks each. The duration of each paper shall be 1 hr (60 Minutes) without any gap. Paper I shall be of Research Aptitude and Paper II shall be on subject selected by the applicant. If a candidate does not appear in paper I he/she shall not be allowed to appear in paper II.
